Module 1: Using the Mouse
The computer mouse is used to move the cursor around the screen so that you may make selections and tell your computer what you want it to do. The modern mouse usually has two buttons, referred to as the left button and the right button, and a scroll wheel. When you move the mouse around on the desk or mouse pad, it causes the cursor (usually represented on the screen as a white arrow) to move around on the screen. When your mouse cursor is hovering above an active link, the shape of the cursor changes from an arrow to a hand.
The left button is the button most commonly used on the mouse. You "left click" when you want to access a program from an icon, or when you want to make a selection from one of the computer menus. On the internet, you "left click" on an active link when you want to go to that particular web page. The scroll wheel is used as one method for scrolling. If you left click once on a particular web page, you can then move up and down the web page by using the scroll wheel. The right button of the mouse is used for a very specific purpose, which is covered in the "Intermediate Internet Topics" class. |
