FAQS About the TEMPECAFE Wireless Network
Can WiFi (wireless) work with any computer or laptop?
Yes, as long as the computer and/ or laptop has 802.11b compliant WiFi card and
the operating system has an Internet browser that supports a proxy.
Will WiFi handheld’s connect with the TEMPECAFE wireless network?
Yes, as long as the WiFi handhelds are 802.11b compliant.
Will I be able to check email wirelessly through Outlook?
No, WiFi connections will only work for web browsing.
What is the capacity and speed for browsing on the WiFi network?
There are 8 Access Points throughout the library and approximately 20 users
can use 1 Access Point. The WiFi network will be monitored to watch for
‘saturation’ or heavy usage.
Can a stack of books be a barrier to the wireless ‘line of sight’?
Possibly, but it should not be too significant a problem. Signal will bounce
from one Access Point to another. WiFi access has the most difficult time with
walls and reflective windows. It would be like listening to a radio, some static
now and then.
How much of a problem will cell phones be to a WiFi connection?
Most cell phones are on a different frequency then the radio frequency used
for a wireless network, so this should not be a problem.
If a laptop is setup for WiFi at a different library, do you have to reset
for each library?
Once the WiFi connection is setup, you do not have to setup again unless you
delete the wireless connection. The Internet browser proxy settings will need to
be changed as you roam between Libraries and your home network.
Is the WiFi internet connection safe for banking?
Yes, WiFi internet connection is relatively safe for banking because the
Access points are behind a firewall which means outside traffic is not able to
watch us. This also means that a wireless laptop user sitting next to you is not
going to be able to watch you surf the internet while using the TEMPECAFE. To be
safe, when sending out personal information via the internet, be sure you have a
encrypted, secure connection by making sure you see a gold padlock in the bottom
right corner of the browser.
Will I lose my internet or network settings for home, when I change to
the TEMPECAFE?
Yes, as you change your laptop settings to the TEMPECAFE, you will want to
write down the internet settings for your home network and when you leave the
library you will probably have to back track through the steps and ‘uncheck
proxy settings’.
